Between 1st and 3rd September, international
trainer Kim from Blenheim CDP, UK took a training session on Mapping. Our CEO,
Mr. Ranjan Dhar along with Sangeeta ji, Tushar, Sachin, Nipun and Neelabh
participated in the training session.
ITEP (maps) has one aim which is to improve the effectiveness of
treatment. Mapping is
like a visual communication tool for
clarifying information which is shared by the client to his counsellor and it
can also improve the communication with a client whose cognitive awareness is
dulled. Kim explained the rules of the way mapping needs to be done. She made
it clear to us that we need to know a little about the client before we start
mapping with him. She also mentioned that we need to understand the power and
the dangers of mapping, we need to know when, how and which map to do depending
on the client and his state.. One very important thing she told us to be very
careful with was never to fit the client to the map, the map has to fit the
client and if at that point of time that particular map is not fitting the
client, change the map.
15 maps were introduced to us out of
which the 1st section “Exploring the self’ was explained in detail and consisted of
4 map themes Strengths, Challenges, Failure (brick wall) and Success which are
use full starting points for Clients to think positively about themselves, identifies
problems they may have in a number of important areas of life, and because it provides
an overview of issues for the client. Kim
asked us to get into groups of 2 and fill in the strengths map with our
partners. The main question of this map
was What Are Your Strengths? Which was broken down to sub headings related to social
relationships, physical, health and appearance, learning, problem solving,
decision making, job and career, ethics, morals and beliefs, motivation and
emotions. At the end of this map was a question that asked How Can You Use Your
Strengths To Improve Your Life? This map helps
the client to become aware as well as have a better understand about his/her strengths and how they
can be used in a positive way. The
map also helps a client develop a better level of self esteem.
Kim briefed
us about the 4 types of maps which are Free maps ,Information
maps, Structured maps and Hybrid maps.
The free map was explained and done practically by each of us
individually. Free maps
- are maps where the counsellor and client work to create maps together freehand, on the problem or issue which is
being discussed or could be on anything else that the client wishes to express.
She asked each one us to make our own free map and gave us 10 minutes to get it
done.
As Sachin recollects his views on the session “Attended this
session on Mapping which would be so informative i had never expected. It was
like peeling an onion layer by layer, same was the case with this session on
mapping it had different layers of valuable information within it. A very thoughtful
innovation to get information related to any body and any sort. By attending
this session i feel more powerful and confident, because for the first time i
saw thing’s from a different perspective and tried to find out solutions for my
problems with the resources available with me. This was really motivating and
skilful technique for life.”
According to Tushar “I take the whole concept of mapping as
one of the most important tools that someone has given to me to play with.
Session continued for two days and still I felt that it was not enough. The
whole technique enables you to find out the solutions of your problems by using
out own inputs to any situation. More over I would like to add to it that it
also helps to identify our true self like our strengths, our weaknesses, our
challenges, the people who matters in our life the most etc. It allows a
counsellor to record all the necessary information about the counselee in a more
systematic order.”
It was a very successful session for both our staff and for Kim. Kim who
was very patient, co-operative and her method of conducting the session were
simply awesome. We really thank Kim for her insights and training. This endeavour with Kim and Blenheim CDP is just a beginning of many more such
treatment modalities to take effect at Shafa Home. We are constantly looking
for new avenues in the treatment concept for our residents.
